Form 8865 Identifying Number Field Updates

The Identifying Number field inputs on Form 8865 has been updated. The option previously labeled "N/A" has been renamed to "Other", and the field no longer auto-populates "APPLD FOR" unless it is specifically typed into the checked "Other" text field.

How it works now

When you select "Other" from the Identifying Number dropdown:

  • A free-text input box appears, allowing you to enter any value appropriate for your situation.
    • Any value you enter will carry through consistently to the PDF output and applicable XML/export formats.
  • If you leave the text box empty, the Identifying Number field on the generated PDF will remain blank

  • If you do not check the EIN Override box, the information will pull from the respective sections on the return (ie: Transferee Information or General Information)

What to do if you previously used "N/A"

If you have existing Form 8865 records where "N/A" was selected and "APPLD FOR" appeared in the output, to reprint properly, re-open the investment, update the Identifying Number field to "Other", enter the correct value (or leave blank if no number applies), and regenerate the PDF.
