Resolving IRS XML Rejection for Form 4720 Attachments with Form 990-T
If your IRS e-filed Form 4720 is being rejected due to issues with the 990-T attachment description in the XML, follow the steps below to resolve the issue and successfully submit your return.
What’s Happening?
If you’re filing a 2024 Form 4720 and are seeing IRS e-file rejections linked to the Form 990-T attachment, please review this guide. The issue comes up because the XML that gets generated includes a description for the 990-T with an unexpected number at the end. This extra detail doesn’t match what the IRS expects, which causes the rejection.
How Can You Fix This Now?
There’s a simple workaround you can use while the team is working on a permanent solution:
- First, remove the current Form 990-T attachment from your return.
- Next, re-attach the document, but this time choose “Other” from the attachment Type options.
- When you see the Description field, type out “Form 990-T” (make sure not to include any extra numbers or text).
- Now, resubmit your return.
Following these steps should do the trick and help your filing get through. For now, it’s best to avoid selecting the “990-T” option from the Type drop-down until the system update rolls out.
What’s Next?
The product team is actively working on a fix so that this Description issue won’t come up in the future. There isn’t a set timeline for this update just yet, so keep using the workaround described above for any affected filings. If things still aren’t working, or you have more questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to support—help is always just a message away.
