Rounding Investor - How it works?
When allocation percentages are applied to partnership totals, the resulting per-investor amounts don't always sum back exactly to the partnership total, this is a known rounding challenge in K-1 production. The Rounding Investor feature lets you designate one investor to automatically receive the residual needed to make every line item reconcile to the partnership Schedule K total.
Designating a Rounding Investor
- Navigate to Investors and click on the investor row you want to designate.
- On the Investor Details page, scroll to the Association Detail section (the fifth section on the page).
- Check the Rounding Investor checkbox.
- Click Save.
A rounding indicator icon will appear next to that investor in both the Investor Details grid and the K-1 Packager grid.
|
💡 To change the rounding investor: Check the Rounding Investor checkbox on a different investor — the previous designation is removed automatically. Only one rounding investor can be designated per entity at a time. Any investor can be designated. |
How the Residual Calculation Works
When you generate all investors in a single run (recommended), the system:
-
Calculates all non-rounding investors first using standard allocation logic.
-
Calculates the rounding investor's amounts as the residual for each line item: Partnership Total − Sum of All Other Investors' Amounts.
This ensures every line item on every investor's K-1 ties exactly back to the partnership total, no manual reconciliation needed.
|
💡 Best practice: Always generate all investors together in a single run to ensure residual logic is applied correctly. |
Regenerating After Data Changes
If you update any allocation code value or K-1 Builder data after generating, regenerate all investors together. The residual calculation will update automatically.
Warnings
Rounding investor generated before all other investors are complete
If you generate the rounding investor before all other investors are calculated, the system will display a warning explaining that the residual cannot yet be calculated and the amounts are not final. The K-1 will still generate using standard allocation logic, generation is not blocked.
To resolve: Once all other investors have been generated, regenerate the rounding investor (or regenerate all investors together) to apply the correct residual calculation.
No rounding investor designated when rounding is detected
After generating K-1s, if the system detects rounding in the final investor totals and no rounding investor has been designated, a dismissible warning popup will appear. Package creation is not blocked.
To resolve: Dismiss the warning and continue, or navigate to Investors, designate a rounding investor, and regenerate to apply residual logic.
