Why “Various” Doesn’t Print on Foreign Forms

Search

What does the “Various” checkbox do?

The “Various” option is there for your own tracking purposes during data entry. It helps you:

  • Mark that a field has been reviewed or completed

  • Keep track of contributions internally

It’s useful for record-keeping, but it does not appear on the final form or get sent in the XML file to the IRS.

Why doesn’t “Various” show up on the form?

This is by design and follows IRS rules. The IRS instructions require either:

  • A valid date, or

  • Leaving the field blank

For example, Federal form instructions say:

“Enter the first date on which title to, possession of, or rights to the use of the property passed for U.S. income tax purposes.”
(See Temporary Regulations section 1.6038B-1T(b)(4))

Since “Various” isn’t a valid date, we’re not allowed to print it or include it in the IRS filing.

So when should I use “Various”?

Use it if you want to mark that you’ve reviewed the field or are still working on getting the right date. It’s a helpful internal tool, but before filing, make sure to:

  • Replace “Various” with an actual date (if one applies), or

  • Leave the field blank if allowed

Summary

  • “Various” is just for tracking—it won’t print or be included in your submission.

  • Use valid dates or leave the field blank to stay compliant with IRS rules.

  • Check form instructions for specific guidance on what to enter.
